Periodontology is a speciality in the field of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the supporting and attaching structures of teeth (i.e. the alveolar bone, gums and ligaments).
Periodontists treat periodontal diseases, which are bacterial or microbial infections that slowly deteriorate a tooth’s supporting tissues.

When should you see a periodontist?

  • If you develop periodontal pockets (these are deep spaces under the gums, which damage attachment between the gums and the root of the tooth)

  • If you feel pain in the gums

  • If your gums bleed

  • If your teeth come loose

  • or if you have bad breath
